Did you know that a human will rarely see your resume that is uploaded online to a website portal? In fact, your resume will go through several computer scannings before a report is printed with the top applicants! Resumes for the human eye do NOT work when being screened by Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS). We will spend some time discussing the specific changes resumes need to have to get through the AI scanning systems. This workshop will be conducted by a guest presenter, Karin Lawton-Dunn, from Iowa State University.

Intro to Graduate Student Career Development

The graduate student experience is complex and unique, and there is typically immense diversity within the graduate education community. There are also equally diverse career tracks for master’s and doctoral students who are completing their graduate degrees at our institutions. In this session, we will highlight some of the unique career development dynamics faced by graduate students, as well as the diverse career landscape that is available beyond tenure-track academia. This session will include examples from national and institution-level career outcomes data as well as career development strategies and resources related to graduate career planning. Audience members will have the opportunity to engage in further discussion about graduate career development and reflect upon some of the challenges and opportunities with their own institutions. This workshop will be conducted by a guest presenter, Andrew Crain, from the University of Georgia.

You will learn how to prepare for and succeed in careers in the non-profit sector from panelists including representatives from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Social Work and the Masters of Public Administration program, the Peace Corps, and non-profit organizations working to address today’s critical issues.

Self-assessment is the best way to learn this information, but how do you do a self-assessment, and, once it is done, what do you do? This workshop will walk you through a self-reflexive assessment activity and will provide space for participants to discuss the results and implications of their self-assessments on their internship search. Higher Ed Careers Beyond the Professoriate: Career Exploration and Job Searching

This workshop will provide an overview of the diverse career fields beyond the professoriate in colleges and universities. The workshop will provide strategies for preparing for diverse careers in higher ed, job searches for higher ed positions beyond the professoriate (including differences between traditional academic and other higher ed markets, how to prepare an administrative CV, framing professional experiences in cover letters, and negotiating administrative position offers), and the rewards and challenges of diverse higher ed careers. Drawing from her own experience as well as her research on higher ed career paths, Dr. Brandy Simula will help those interested in diverse careers in higher ed to develop a better understanding of the career options and how to prepare for and navigate the job market for higher ed careers beyond the faculty track.
